The set I’ve been waiting for so long has finally arrived… Currently there is no English content on Washizu Mahjong on the web. I’ll do my best to change that, and try to share the beauty of this variant with you. There were many transparent tile sets on the internet, but this one, being an official Akagi product, especially caught my attention. The case and the gloves that came with it made it further stand out. I did a lot of research on transparent sets before I purchased this one. Although the pictures of the Akagi set showed the pin-zu to be all black and red as they should, the sets on the pictures taken by players who had purchased transparent sets all had green pin-zu. Luckily, there are no green pin-zu in this set, and all the tiles match exactly the coloring of the tiles in the Akagi series. Before I begin, if you haven’t read or seen Akagi, the following pictures may contain spoilers. Continue at your own will. |

This set is an old one indeed, the type that we see in old movies or animations like Janki and Tetsuya. The art on the wanzu and the jihai varies from modern sets in that they resemble a more Chinese type of set. The tiles are somewhat smaller, and somewhat more slippery. I got this set from Aya Sensei as a gift, who had the set and a playing mat along with it from her father. Her father is in Japan, so the set wasn’t being used here in Turkey and she decided to give it to me. I am really thankful, considering how much I needed the set at the time.

Tenhou is one of the best sites out there for playing Riichi Mahjong online. You can join games for your skill level, or create lobbies where you can play with your friends. And the best part: its all free! Tenhou, however, happens to be a Japanese site and there is no English option. But that is no problem. You can find the directions on using the site any other documentation you’re looking for on Tenhou right here. |
